A water leak at home: what should you note before calling a plumber?
Useful first observations after a water leak, the limits of emergency actions, and what to tell a plumbing professional.

If you find a leak, describe what you see without dismantling equipment or opening a wall. If water is near an outlet or electrical device, move away and do not enter the wet area. If the shut-off valve is clearly identified, accessible and safe to operate, turning it off may limit the flow. Do not force a stuck valve.
Identify where the water seems to be coming from
Note the room, where the water appears, the time and whether the flow is continuous or linked to using an appliance. A mark on a ceiling or wall does not prove that a pipe is directly behind it; water can travel through a building. Do not drill or remove a finish to look for the leak.
Take photos from a dry position, protect belongings you can move safely and collect water in a container if it is safe to do so. If a neighbour, shared area or several homes may be affected, promptly alert the property manager or other people concerned.
Prepare before you call
Give the address and access details, the affected room, what you have observed, which appliances were in use when the leak started and any steps already taken. Mention whether the water supply has been shut off and whether that reduced the flow. Ask the professional if any other information would help them prepare for the visit.
If you rent, inform the owner or property manager as soon as possible and keep records of messages and photos. Maintenance and repair responsibilities depend on the situation. ANIL, France’s housing information agency, describes distinctions between routine tenant maintenance and repairs that fall to the owner. If there is water damage, contact your insurer to learn which steps your policy requires.
Do not attempt an improvised repair on an inaccessible pipe or pressurised equipment. If the flow is substantial, getting worse or creating an electrical hazard, move away and seek appropriate help without delay.
